Overview:
The Rebels are the best team in the game,
and rightly so. After all they’re the original and final heroes of the
Star Wars Trilogy. Series 2 saw a pretty weak Rebel team, but when
Series 3 came along, the Rebels jumped to the top of the list of
Attacktix Factions. In fact, you can just about take all of your Series
2 Rebels and toss them aside (with the exception of R2). This team
brings a collection of strong Special Powers, good Effects, a very
strong Striker, and plenty of mix and match options at Launcher. Their
well-roundedness earns them the top spot.
Strikers:
The Rebels have four
options at Striker (not counting C3PO), but standing head and shoulders
above the rest is Series 3 Luke Skywalker. He has a large base, good
striking power, and the best power in the entire game! What makes it the best is his high ratio
(62%) is supported by an entire faction - any Rebel can keep Luke in
play. He can be can be a bit tricky to master, because his arm has a
tendency to move around while you're trying to strike. Series 2 Luke
has some good qualities, but his special just doesn't compare with
Series 3 Luke. The ten extra points for S3 Luke are very well spent. If
you're forced to use S2 Luke, his special can allow another Striker to
get into range very quickly.
Chewbacca returns for a third
installment, this time with a wicked uppercut. It doesn't have quite
the potential for multiple kills as a standard Striker, but he's still
pretty good for a 20 point figure. Old Ben joins the Rebels in Series 3
and gets mixed reviews. I initially thought he was a world class
disappointment, but I have since softened my stance. He does have very
good defense and a powerful strike (if you use it correctly). The real
problem is his Special Power. He gets to use it against any of the opponent's figures, but it definitely has limited usefulness.
Launchers:
In the area of Launchers, Series 3 was
very kind to the Rebel team. In a surprising turn of events, the most
powerful Rebel Launcher is a small bullet figure - Princess Leia. She
packs a serious punch! The best part is that her Series 3 version
weighs in at only 20 points. With a great special to boot, she joins
her twin brother as the two best Rebel figures, hands down.
The Rebel bonus doesn't end there. This
team has gained several 20 point large bullet Launchers in Series 3:
Han Solo, Wedge, and two versions of Captain Antilles. And for 20 point
figures, they have pretty decent Special Powers. In fact, the only 30 point S3 large missile Launcher is Biggs, but he has a pretty useful special power too.
If all of that wasn't enough, the Rebels
also get Han and Luke in Stormtrooper disguise, giving you the option
of free attacks on your turn. Hasbro has issued an official answer that
you cannot get four attacks in a turn just by using both Han and Luke as
Stormtroopers. You have to choose a free attack for one or the other.
But that answer (given to the and not the public as a whole) doesn't completely solve the controversy because Hasbro's website states that you can get those four attacks by using both figures. And the Series 3 booklet
that now comes in Series 3 boosters says nothing about this rule. Right
now, I say house rules apply.
Something crazy has happened with the
Rebel team - they got a Force Blaster. Nothing too exotic there. The
crazy part is that they've made a believer out of me! I have hated
pretty much every Force Blast figure that's come out so far, but I
really like S3 Starter Luke. I've had some good success using him on
offense, and his big base and Special Power make him very tough to
knock out. He's the first Force Blaster that can stay in the game
without sacrificing another figure, and that's a big plus in my book.
Special Powers:
It just keeps getting better for the Rebel team. The Rebels have three figures, three figures, four figures and two figures. Those powers are all about bringing or keeping figures in the
game. Most of those ratios are near or above 50%. C3P0 brings in a new
twist with , giving you the possibility of NO ATTACKS against your Rebels for one round! The rest of the Rebel powers are and (both of which can be very helpful to Striker Luke!) and only Old Ben is stuck with a lousy special: .
Effects:
Lest the Rebel team come up with a
weakness, we find them strong in the Effects category as well. Between
Luke and Han in Stormtrooper disguise and R2-D2, the Rebels can rack up
extra attacks very quickly. I'm sure a lot of folks out there really
like R2 for his Effect power, but the thing I like most about him is
his Special Power. He only gives you extra attacks 1/3 of the time, and
that's just not enough of a payoff for me. However, I sometimes like to
put two of him out on the table because he's a cheap shield that has a
legitimate shot to .
Other Figures:
The Rebel team is the most well-rounded
team in the game and really doesn't need support from anyone else.
Because they have so many figures to choose from, I usually play them
as an all Rebel squad. The only figures I'd really throw into the mix
are S2 Starter Kenobi and the Medic Droid if you like to use it.
